About Sara
Sara’s commitment to writing for social justice began in her teens when she was inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird.
Aged 13, she joined Amnesty International.
She went on to read Dead Man Walking and wrote to Sister Helen Prejean who personally encouraged her to join the USA Death Row Support Group.
Sara corresponded with an inmate on Death Row in Oklahoma until the time of his execution in 2007. She remains committed to prison reform, prevention and community based work.
Sara pursued a degree in English & Spanish Literature from University College Cork, trained as a teacher in the University of Edinburgh and taught English for 17 years in Fife.
She served as a Guidance Teacher in areas of high deprivation and during this time became acutely aware of the links between poverty, trauma, care experienced children, school exclusion and the justice system.
Sara’s dedication to child welfare led her to work in the Public Protection Unit. She went on to earn a postgraduate qualification in Child Welfare and Protection from the University of Stirling. She is now an experienced training officer in single and multi agency child protection.
Sara’s writing reflects her unwavering belief that books have the power to change the world. She is committed to amplifying the voices of care-experienced children who have encountered the justice system at a young age.
All of her work is dedicated to making the world a fairer and safer place for children.
Sara lives in Fife.
